Updating its identity to support strategic growth, the organization added the name Cantata Adult Life Services to meet the promise and possibility of living our best lives after 55. Our skilled nursing function retains the name British Home Rehabilitation Services.

In tune with the changing needs of active adults, the organization launched a strategic vision to expand its services to a broader group of adults.

2010

British Home Rehabilitation Services earned a 5 Star rating from Medicare, the highest rating available.

2006

The British Home opened the Active Living Center as the new hub of the campus, featuring a Geriatrics Physicians Clinic, a Fitness Center and a brand new therapy space, where on-site physical, occupational and speech therapists provide skilled rehabilitation on both an inpatient and outpatient basis.

The British Home celebrates its 85th Anniversary!

2003

The Woodlands Assisted Living residence opened. Named after the great wooded views from almost every window, The Woodlands boasts of 73 apartment homes that range in size from studios and deluxe studios, to one and two-bedroom floor plans. Amenities and services at The Woodlands include two whirlpool spas, hair salon, library, lounges on each floor, restaurant-style dining, housekeeping and laundry services plus the provision for assistance with daily living activities if necessary.

1996

Throughout the 1990s, The British Home began to reach out to the community-at-large through programs such as Abbeyfield House (a shared residence for healthy seniors located in a Brookfield neighborhood), Handy Menders (a home repair service), and Staying-at-Home (a program to provide all forms of non-medical help to enable seniors to continue living independently in the general community).

1995

In 1995, residents were helped by the Salt Creek Quilters Guild to prepare The British Home's 75th Anniversary Quilt.

1990

The British Home celebrated the addition of an on-site Health Care and Rehabilitation Center. Today this facility is called British Home Rehabilitation Services and offers 72 beds licensed for intermediate and skilled nursing care, as well as Medicare-Certified Rehabilitation Services.

1986

The British Home celebrated the campus addition of the Wye Valley Apartment building.Today Wye Valley offers 66 spacious and comfortable one and two-bedroom apartments for active, independent seniors. Other amenities at Wye Valley include an on-site hair salon, library, computer lab, commons room, transportation and dining services.

1974

The British Home opened its doors to persons of all nationalities.

1952

The British Home opened its first "infirmary," for the purpose of serving the needs of residents who required nursing services either while temporarily recovering from an illness, or on a long-term basis.

1925

The British Home celebrated its grand opening with 24 original residents. In the early days, many employees also lived on campus. Employees and residents worked together to plant a vegetable garden and tend a chicken coop. Much of the fruit, vegetables and eggs were then used by employees in preparing meals for residents.

1924

The foundation stone was laid by Mrs. Julie Cooke Adams, the first President of our Board of Directors, who remained president for 35 years and later became a resident of The British Home.

1922

Samuel Insull, then President of Commonwealth Edison, donated ten acres of land that included an apple orchard, and is the site of our present-day campus.

1920

The British Home was founded by the Daughters of the British Empire and other philanthropic organizations as a not-for-profit retirement home for elderly British immigrants residing in the United States. The British Home later opened its doors to welcome older adults of all nationalities, and today enjoys a diverse mix of residents from many different backgrounds.
